Ridge Tile Repair Project Completed in Iwade

Hi, I’m Michael, owner of Michaels Roofing & Building.

This page is based on a recent roof repairs Iwade project where we were called out after a homeowner noticed pieces of mortar had started appearing on their driveway following a period of strong winds.

At first, they assumed it was simply old mortar falling from the roof, but when we carried out a full inspection, we discovered that several ridge tiles had become loose and the original mortar bedding had started to fail along a large section of the roof ridge.

Fortunately, they contacted us before the ridge tiles became detached completely, preventing what could have become a much more expensive repair.

Step 1 – Arriving at the Property and Assessing the Problem

When we arrived at the property in Iwade, I always like to start by speaking with the homeowner before getting any equipment out.

They explained they had recently swept up several pieces of cement from their driveway after strong winds and had become concerned that something had fallen from the roof.

Before climbing onto the roof, we carried out a full visual inspection from ground level.

We looked for:

This immediately suggested the bedding mortar had started to fail.

Step 2 – Safe Roof Access and Close Inspection

We positioned our ladders safely from the front of the property and used ridge hooks to allow us to inspect the roof without placing unnecessary pressure on the tiles.

Once on the roof, the issue became much clearer.

We discovered:

Four ridge tiles had become loose
Mortar bedding had cracked underneath several tiles
Small sections of mortar had completely broken away
Previous repairs had been carried out using different mortar mixes
Wind movement had allowed several ridge tiles to rock slightly when pressure was applied

Although none of the ridge tiles had fallen, they were no longer securely fixed and could easily have become dangerous during another period of bad weather.

Step 3 – Removing the Loose Ridge Tiles

Rather than simply pointing over the cracked mortar, we removed each affected ridge tile completely.

This is something we always recommend because patch repairs rarely last if the bedding underneath has already failed.

Once the ridge tiles had been lifted, we found:

Loose and crumbling mortar
Areas where the original bedding had separated from the ridge tiles
Small gaps allowing rainwater to enter
Moss trapped beneath some of the joints

Everything was cleaned back to a solid surface before any new materials were installed.

Doing this properly creates a much stronger repair and prevents future movement.

Step 4 – Rebuilding the Ridge

With the old mortar completely removed, we prepared fresh bedding mortar and carefully reset each ridge tile.

The repair included:

Removing all failed mortar
Cleaning ridge tiles thoroughly
Preparing fresh bedding
Re-laying the ridge tiles
Repointing each joint
Aligning the ridge line
Checking every adjoining ridge tile for movement

We also checked the neighbouring ridge tiles while we were working, ensuring there weren’t any further weak spots developing.

Step 5 – Inspecting the Rest of the Roof

Whenever we complete ridge tile repairs, I always inspect the surrounding roof at no extra charge.

On this property we also found:

Two slightly slipped roof tiles
Small areas of moss around the upper roof
Lead flashing still in good condition
No signs of internal water ingress

We secured the slipped tiles while already on the roof, helping prevent another future call-out.

These small preventative repairs often save homeowners hundreds of pounds later.

Step 6 – Final Checks and Customer Walkthrough

After the mortar had been finished, we carried out a complete inspection of the repaired ridge.

We checked:
